The Night My Son Set a Place at the Table for My Dead Husband2

Michael looked me in the eyes and said, “Dad wasn’t just a farmer before he met you.”

The letter revealed that Robert had secretly worked as a CIA field operative during the Cold War before leaving that dangerous life forever.

He wrote that someone from his past had contacted him shortly before his death, bringing back fears he thought were buried forever.

Inside the box were photographs, government papers, foreign newspaper clippings, and a journal proving every word.

Robert explained he wanted me to remember the husband I loved before learning about the man he used to be.

At the bottom of the box rested one final sealed envelope marked, “Only if you choose to know more.”

After a long silence, I placed it back without opening it.

The man I married had already chosen his future when he chose our family over a life filled with danger.

Driving home, I finally understood that Robert’s greatest secret was never his past.

It was that every single day for forty-one years, he willingly chose an ordinary life because loving his family meant more than living an extraordinary one.
