What Was Inside Alexandra’s Pocket Left Two Traffic Officers Frozen In The Middle Of That Road2

Two men in plain jackets stepped out of the SUV, federal agents who had been following her at a distance after a threat against her office that week. They had watched the entire stop through binoculars, and one of them held a tablet showing the footage. The officers realized that every word, every shove, and the cuffs had been recorded. The second inspector tried to say it was a routine check, and the agent calmly replied that routine checks do not involve pressing a woman against a car.

Alexandra did not raise her voice. She asked both officers for their names and badge numbers, and they gave them in small, cracked voices. She told them the stop would be reviewed by the state police and the Department of Justice, and she asked them to wait by their patrol car. Then she picked up her documents from the roof of the car, thanked the agents, and sat in her driver’s seat for several minutes with her hands on the wheel, breathing slowly.

The investigation took three weeks. It showed that the two officers had stopped nineteen other drivers in the previous six months with no violations, several of them women driving alone, and had issued citations they later cancelled in exchange for small payments. A county prosecutor filed charges, and both men were suspended without pay, then convicted of extortion and civil rights violations. The department adopted body cameras and a public complaint line.

Alexandra visited her mother that Sunday, and she told the story over dinner, laughing nervously. Her mother squeezed her hand and said she was proud. A month later, a young man whose citation had been cancelled came to thank her, his hands shaking. She keeps her badge in the same pocket now, and whenever she drives past a patrol car, she waves.
