A Teenage Boy Bought A Stranger’s Coffee Every Morning Until One Day He Vanished2

At the hospital, the nurse, whose name was Joan, led me to bed three, where a boy lay with a bandaged forehead and a cast on his leg. His name was Eli. Five years earlier his father had died of cancer on Joan’s floor, and Joan had held his hand through the last night. The man had talked only about his son. Joan was moved to another unit the next week and never saw the boy again.

Eli explained in a quiet voice. After the funeral he lived with his aunt, who worked overnight. Over a year ago he recognized Joan at my window but was too shy to speak. His father had once said someone should buy that woman a coffee, because she never sat down. So Eli paid every morning with his weekend dishwashing money and parked across the road to make sure she got in safely. The cupcake was for the birthday Joan once mentioned to his father.

The accident was black ice on Route 9. His leg was broken and his concussion serious, but the doctors promised a full recovery. His aunt was driving back from Maine, so he had woken up alone. Joan simply sat down beside him and held his hand. Then my manager, Gordon, arrived with flowers, looking pale. He apologized to all of us and admitted he had never been so glad to be wrong.

Eli healed through the spring, and his aunt took a day job so she could be home at night. Joan visited weekly, and by summer she felt like family. Now she meets him at my window every Saturday and pays for his hot chocolate. He is studying to become a nurse. I keep the birthday photo framed beside the register, and I always ask people their names now.
