My Sister Walked Into My Penthouse Smiling At The Camera While I Watched From Overseas2

The document was a forged deed transferring my penthouse to something called the Brennan Family Trust, with my signature copied from an old birthday card. Dad had asked a notary friend to prepare it. A county clerk noticed the signature looked traced and called the Marshals Service, because the owner was a federal officer. That is why agents were already on their way before Delia ever swung the poker.

As for the temporary code, it came from Gordon, an old friend of Dad’s who worked for the maintenance company I had canceled. He had kept the appointment email and handed it over for a favor. Agents visited my parents’ house in that same hour. Mom and Dad were sitting at the kitchen table with a folder of mail forwarding forms and Delia’s address change papers. Mom cried that they only wanted what was fair, and Dad said nothing at all.

A female deputy sat with the children, gave them juice, and phoned their father, who drove over from Cary within the hour and took them home. Delia was arrested for unlawful entry and for damaging the security panel. She apologized to the children in the hallway, but not once to the camera. I watched it all from my hotel room with my hands pressed against my face, grateful the little ones had been kept far from the office door.

The deed was voided within the week. Dad pleaded guilty to forgery and received probation and a fine, the notary lost his license, and Gordon lost his job. I flew home three days later, changed every code, and removed the maintenance company from my records. Months later, Delia asked to meet me at a café, not the penthouse, and finally said she was sorry. I help my family when the need is real, but now nobody has my code.
