The Barber Looked At The Old Photograph That A Little Boy Handed Him And Froze2

I told Mateo the story as best I remembered it. The young man in the photograph was named Rafael Duarte, and he had arrived from Cuba that spring with nothing but a cardboard suitcase. My father cut his hair for free, wrote “paid in full” on the back of the photo, and told him to come back someday and tell him how the interview went. Rafael never returned, and my father wondered about it for years.

Mateo, it turned out, was Rafael’s grandson. His grandfather had gotten the job, a janitor’s position at a hospital, and had worked his way up to hospital administrator over forty years. He had always meant to come back, but life got in the way, and by the time he remembered, he believed the shop was gone. He carried the photograph his whole life and told his family that one free haircut had given him the confidence to walk into that interview.

I lifted Mateo into the chair and cut his hair with great care. Slow and precise, with a neat part on the left, exactly like the picture. He watched in the mirror with big serious eyes, and when I finished, he whispered, “That is my grandpa.” I stood behind him with my hands on his shoulders and could not say anything at all. A few customers had stopped talking, and an old man in the corner wiped his face with a napkin.

Then Mateo’s mother came in, carrying a small envelope. Inside were a hundred dollars and a note. “From Rafael, with forty years of interest. He wanted this given to the barber’s son.” I refused the money, but she insisted, so we framed the note, and I took the cash and used it to give another hundred haircuts the next summer. The photograph now hangs on my wall, next to my father’s, and the sign still says “Closed for Prayer.”
