She Paid For A Stranger’s Groceries And Never Imagined Who Would Knock On Her Door2

Ruth sat in my kitchen with her cane across her knees and told me everything. In our second year of nursing school, she had discovered that her tuition was paid in full by an anonymous scholarship. It was not anonymous. I had quietly taken double night shifts at a diner for months to cover it, because her father had lost his job and she was about to drop out. Ruth found my pay stubs and the receipt in my coat pocket one rainy afternoon in March.

She said she was too proud to accept it and too ashamed to say thank you. So she picked a quarrel about the borrowed car, packed her bags that night, and moved away. She worked at hospitals in three states, raised a daughter, and lost her husband young. Every year she wrote me a letter and never sent it, because she feared I had forgotten her. She handed me a worn shoebox, and inside lay thirty-nine letters, one for every year apart.

Caleb explained how they found me. After his shift that Thursday, he told his grandmother about the woman who paid for his groceries, and she asked him to describe me. When he mentioned my laugh and a small silver nurse’s pin on my coat, Ruth went silent. She had given me that pin on graduation day. The cashier, who knew me from years of Thursdays, said I lived near Dover Street, and the rest was a long evening of knocking on doors.

I read every letter that night while Ruth slept in my spare room. I told her there was nothing to repay and that I would do it all again. She cried, and then she laughed, the same laugh from the hospital steps. Caleb found steady work at a better company, and he and the baby, Noah, now live ten minutes from me. Every Thursday at four, Ruth and I shop together at the Fairview Market, and I always let her pay for the apples.
