My Mother In Law Handed Me An Empty Gift Box And I Said Thank You2

I told her gently that it was real, and that there were two. Judith pressed the photograph against her chest and began to cry, quietly at first, then so hard that her sister rushed over to hold her. Daniel knelt beside me and kissed my hands, laughing and weeping at once. The room, which had been frozen, suddenly filled with noise, and someone began to clap. I sat very still. I had braced myself for many reactions, but never for this one.

When she could speak, Judith asked to talk with me alone. We sat in her cold pantry among the jars of preserves, and she told me something Daniel had never known. Thirty years earlier she had lost two babies before Daniel was born, and she had learned to protect herself by expecting nothing. Every year she had watched me, hoping for news, and every year she had hidden her longing under sharp words. The empty box, she said, was the cruelest thing she had ever done, and she was deeply ashamed of it.

I was angry, and I told her so. I said I had spent four years trying to earn a place at her table, and that I would not raise children where kindness had to be earned. Judith did not defend herself. She took my hands, bowed her head, and said she understood if I never forgave her. She asked only for a chance to be a better grandmother than she had been a mother in law. I told her I would think about it, and I meant it.

The next weeks were quiet. Judith wrote me a long letter with no excuses in it, and she began to visit with soup instead of advice. In August, she was in the hospital waiting room when our daughters were born, holding a knitted blanket in each arm. She had made both of them herself in secret. Today the first thing in each baby’s room is a small gold box on the shelf. It is full of tissue paper and tiny socks, and Judith filled it herself.
