My Son Announced He Was Taking The Lake House My Husband And I Built Together2

Gavin dropped onto the porch steps and finally told the truth. Two months earlier, behind on their loan payments, he had sold Raymond’s cedar table and restored porch chairs to an antiques dealer in Millbrook for $3,000, then told Delaney they were in storage. She had found the receipt only that morning, which was why she had stopped protecting him. He wept and swore he never meant to hurt me, only to keep the business alive a little longer.

Then I told them the rest of what I had asked Helen to arrange. I would take the house back, but I would not throw my son into the cold. They had thirty days to move out, and I would pay the deposit on a small rental near the city. I wanted my son back more than I wanted to win. In return, I asked only that Gavin look me in the eye and repay every dollar he had taken.

The following Saturday, Gavin and I drove to Millbrook. The dealer, an old man named Walter, still had the cedar table and both chairs. He agreed to sell them back at cost, with Gavin paying $1,500 now from his savings and the rest from his new warehouse job. Meanwhile, Delaney tore out the soundproof foam herself, apologized in the doorway of Raymond’s study, and asked if she could repaint it the shade he had chosen. She took down the sign that same afternoon and moved her consultations to a rented office.

By the end of the month, the family had moved out peacefully, the table sat by the window again, and the chairs were back on the porch. Now the lake house is protected in a family trust with equal shares for both my children, and Gavin pays me back every month. Last Sunday, Natalie and Gavin sat together on the porch with coffee mugs while the sunlight crossed the water. For the first time since Raymond died, the house felt like ours again.
