I Cared For My Silent Mother In Law For Months Until One Day Everything Changed2

The letter was an apology written in shaky handwriting. Helen admitted she had been wrong about me from the very beginning. She wrote that she had judged me by my small bank account and plain clothes, never by how I loved her son. After the accident she had felt completely helpless, yet every day I washed her hair and hummed softly while I did it. She could not bear knowing she had done nothing to deserve that kindness.

About two months earlier, she had felt her toes move. She kept it secret and practiced standing at night while we slept, because she was terrified of promising a recovery and then failing. She also did not trust her voice until she could say the words properly. Toby had caught her one afternoon, and she begged him to keep the secret for just a little while. The blue box was part of her plan. Months ago she had seen me crying when the clasp on my mother’s necklace snapped, and she had never forgotten it.

In the duffel bag she had hidden a sewing kit, a new silver clasp, and her own late mother’s pearl bracelet. She had asked Toby to fetch the box so she could repair the necklace with her own hands before returning it. She also wanted to place the bracelet beside my mother’s letters, as a promise that I belonged in this family. The necklace now lay mended on the table, shining softly. I cried so hard that Toby climbed into my lap and apologized for keeping the secret. I told him he had done nothing wrong.

Helen asked in a trembling voice whether I could ever forgive her. I knelt, took her hands, and told her I already had. When Russell walked in, he stopped and stared at his mother standing. She told him how wrong she had been about his wife, and he wept. Within months she walked into Toby’s school play unaided, and every Sunday we cook together. I wear my mother’s necklace, and nobody in that house doubts that I belong.
