I was thirty-four when my parents turned my entire life into an ultimatum.

If I didn’t marry before thirty-five, they would cut me out of their inheritance. They didn’t care about my happiness, only appearances. My career as an architect meant nothing to them compared to being able to say their daughter was “properly settled.” Every family dinner became pressure, comparisons, and subtle insults disguised as concern.

After one particularly humiliating dinner, I saw a man sitting outside a grocery store. He looked exhausted, dressed in worn clothes, holding a cardboard sign. Something about his quiet presence stopped me. I brought him food, and for the first time in days, I spoke without being judged. In a moment of anger and desperation, I did something unthinkable—I asked him to marry me. A legal arrangement. Temporary. A solution to my parents’ threats. He hesitated, then agreed. I told myself it was madness. Still, I followed through.

Three weeks later, we were married in a courthouse ceremony that felt more like paperwork than love. My parents were thrilled, completely unaware of the truth. Stan moved into my home and quickly adapted—calm, helpful, observant. He fixed things around the house and never overstepped. We lived like polite strangers sharing a roof, bound only by an agreement neither of us fully understood.
