Judge Fitch played the video in chambers with both attorneys present. It showed Brianna in the Sinclairs’ kitchen, emptying Elise’s prenatal vitamin bottle and refilling it with prescription sleeping pills while Graham leaned against the counter. “Two more weeks,” Brianna said on the recording, “and she’ll look so unstable no judge will give her that baby.” Graham laughed. Elise covered her mouth and turned away from the screen. Even Brianna’s lawyer stopped objecting.
Suddenly, Elise’s exhaustion made sense. The fog, the forgetfulness, the days she could barely stand. She had believed it was the pregnancy and the heartbreak. Their plan was simple. Make her look unfit, push her into giving up everything, then sue for custody of the newborn. Elise had agreed to surrender the property only because Graham threatened to take the baby if she fought him. Daisy had been too scared to tell anyone until she saw Elise crying in the hallway that morning.
Judge Fitch rejected the property waiver on the spot and issued an emergency protective order. Officers arrested Brianna and Graham in the hallway that afternoon. Elise’s doctor confirmed the sedatives in her blood, and an ultrasound showed the baby was healthy. Judge Fitch thanked Daisy personally for being braver than the adults in that room. Daisy went home that night with her maternal grandmother, who had been begging for years to see more of her.
Six weeks later, Elise gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The divorce was finalized that spring, and the court awarded Elise the house, half the savings, and full custody. Graham and Brianna both accepted plea deals. The first visitor at the hospital was Daisy, still in her yellow cardigan. She held her baby sister on her lap and asked if they could name her Hope. They did. Daisy visits every weekend.
