I read the page twice. It was a sealed letter in my grandfather’s handwriting, dated the week before he died, attached to a signed amendment to the trust. Preston cleared his throat. “Captain, this amendment names her sole beneficiary, and it adds a clause I rarely see.” My pulse thudded. “What clause?” I asked. He turned the page toward me, and the final paragraph began with my father’s full name.
The clause stated that if any family member ever tried to take the house, forge a signature, or pressure me to give it up, the trust would automatically transfer a second property, a lakefront cabin, plus a savings account, to me, and cut that person from every inheritance. Captain Morales whispered, “He saw this coming.” Then Preston’s phone buzzed, and his face changed. “Ma’am, your parents’ attorney just filed a petition this morning.”
