My Parents Called Me At Two In The Morning Demanding Money For My Brother’s Emergency2

Officer Lane explained that Derek had borrowed from a private lender and now owed sixty thousand dollars. My parents panicked and made a plan. They would invent an emergency to rush twenty-five thousand dollars out of me, forge my name on a loan as backup, and secretly transfer the lake cottage to themselves to sell. Jenna had been told only that she was helping pay hospital bills. The sticky note was their script, written to stop me from asking where my brother really was.

The man Jenna warned me about was the lender’s collector. He had pounded on my parents’ door in the middle of the night, and a neighbor called 911, which is why officers were there at 2:40. They found the loan papers on the table and my brother holding a bandaged hand he had hurt punching a cabinet in frustration. Within minutes, Lane’s partner reached Jenna’s car, and the collector was arrested for threats that same night. The police then asked whether I wanted to press charges for the forged signature. I did not answer right away.

I drove to my parents’ house that afternoon with Scott beside me. My mother cried and said they only wanted to save Derek. My father could not meet my eyes. I told them I would have helped if they had simply told me the truth, but they chose to forge my name and trick my sister instead. Derek finally stood up and admitted the gambling, the lies, and the years they had covered for him. Then he asked for help, and my parents said nothing at all.

I pressed charges for the forgery, but I asked the court for a plan instead of jail. My parents agreed to repay the debt from their own savings, and Derek entered a treatment program. Jenna and I placed the cottage in a trust that no one can sell without both our signatures. That summer, we sat on the porch where Grandma Ruth used to shell peas, and Jenna cried and apologized. I told her she had never been the problem. For the first time, I was no longer the daughter who simply obeyed.
