My Husband Handed Me His Credit Card And Left Me Alone With A Chore List2

I did not cry. I called my bank’s fraud line instead. The agent confirmed that the savings account was in my name only, so Mateo’s transfer was unauthorized, and she opened a claim and credited the full four thousand dollars back within the hour. Then I opened his credit card app, where I was an authorized user, and read it like a cost analyst. I found fourteen months of sportsbook charges, a nine thousand dollar balance, and the eleven hundred dollar resort refund he had pocketed after cancelling our booking. Kendra and Russell were three weeks behind on the rent for this house, and Mateo had promised them free labor and my savings, because he assumed I had nowhere to go.

Mateo had told me to do whatever I needed with his card, so I did. I hired a professional cleaning crew to finish every item on Kendra’s list and booked a caterer for the steak and pasta, all charged to him. Then I called my sister Marisol in Houston, who drove down in fifty minutes. On the notebook I wrote, “Cooking and cleaning completed by professionals. Receipts attached.” We left before the rest of them returned, and I checked into the resort I had originally planned, paid for with my own money.

When they returned at seven, they found a spotless house, a hot dinner, and the notebook. Mateo called me twelve times. When I finally answered, I told him the bank had flagged his transfer, that my attorney would handle everything, and that he should speak to her instead of me. Russell and Kendra lost their rental deposit a week later when the owner chased the unpaid rent.

I spent the remaining nine days at the beach with Marisol, and I did not clean a single thing. The bank closed its investigation in my favor, and my divorce was final four months later. I flew home on a ticket I booked myself and framed Kendra’s chore list on my kitchen wall in Charlotte.
