I Watched My Son Stand At My Cabin Door With A Locksmith But Stayed Calm2

Deputy Ridley answered on the second ring. Ten days earlier, after the locks were changed, I had visited the county sheriff’s office and told him everything, and he had given me his direct line. “Stay on the camera,” he said. “We are four minutes away.” The locksmith heard me say the word forged through the speaker, set down his tools, and backed away. “I was told this was his house,” he said. “I want no part of this.” Then he walked to his van.

Two patrol cars pulled in before Kyle could run. Deputy Ridley asked to see the deed, and Kyle stammered that I had signed it willingly. I told the deputy through the camera that I had spent that entire week visiting my sister, with receipts to prove it. The notary stamp belonged to Courtney’s mother, Beverly, who later admitted she stamped the page without ever meeting me. Kyle had copied my signature from an old birthday card.

I drove to the cabin that evening and found Kyle sitting on the porch steps after the deputies had finished questioning him, with Courtney crying beside him. He finally confessed that they were months behind on their mortgage and the bank had threatened foreclosure. They planned to take the cabin, sell it quickly, and clear the debt, and the pink paint was meant to make it feel like theirs before I could stop them. I told him I loved him, but love was not a key he could copy.

Because I asked for mercy, the prosecutor offered Kyle a deal. He pleaded to a lesser charge, paid for the locksmith and the paint damage, and agreed to financial counseling, while Beverly lost her notary license. His apology letter took three months to write honestly, and I kept it. The following summer, the pink paint came off the porch wall after two coats, and the cedar glowed again. Now the girls visit as invited guests, and every morning I drink coffee from Frank’s old mug and watch the sun rise over Pine Lake.
