My Parents Said Everything Was Easier Without Me So I Did Something They Never Expected2

The stranger introduced himself as Walter Pruitt, a private lender. He told me my father had borrowed from him for six years to cover gambling debts, ending with a loan of $190,000 secured against my parents’ old house. They had sold it, but the sale barely covered the interest. Mom finally spoke through tears and admitted the truth. They had planned to use the bungalow as new collateral, and they kept me away from Christmas because I handle every piece of paper in our family and would have noticed the debt. The joke at Nora’s expense was only a convenient excuse.

I did not shout. I drove to their house and found Dad sitting on the floor with his head in his hands, unable to look at me. I told him the bungalow would never pay a gambling debt. Instead, I met Walter the next morning and paid the remaining $60,000 directly to him, so no money ever touched my father’s hands. In return, Dad agreed to attend counseling twice a week, and Mom agreed to let me review their finances every month.

The bungalow stayed in my name, and I found my parents a ground-floor apartment near Mom’s park and paid the first year of rent. Then I called my contact at the housing program about Denise. My company’s payroll department happened to have an opening, and she cried when she accepted. Her offer letter gave her the proof of income her landlord had demanded, and I leased her the bungalow for one dollar a year for the first twelve months, with the option to buy it later.

My parents apologized to Nora first, in front of the whole family, and then to me. Dad has not placed a bet since. On moving day, Ruby taped one last paper snowflake to the bay window and told me it was for good luck. The following Christmas, I invited exactly who I chose, and my parents were welcome as long as they brought the pie.
