A Widow Learns to Drive at Last and Follows Her Late Husband’s Secret Route to the Truth

I drove those forty minutes with my hands shaking on the leather wheel, every mile taking me further from the life I thought I knew. The GPS led me out of our town, past fields I’d only ever watched slide by from the passenger seat, and finally into a quiet neighborhood I had never seen. “You have arrived home,” the voice announced, and I pulled up in front of a small, tidy house with a wheelchair ramp built onto the porch and a garden out front full of the same blue hydrangeas Gerald used to plant along our fence.

My heart was pounding so hard I could barely breathe. Every terrible possibility raced through my mind. Another woman. A second family. A whole hidden life. I sat in the truck for ten minutes before I found the courage to walk up that ramp and knock. The door opened, and a woman about my own age looked at me, then at the truck in the driveway, and her face crumpled. “You’re Gerald’s wife,” she said softly. It wasn’t a question. “I wondered if you’d ever come.” She stepped back to let me in, and behind her, in a chair by the window, sat an elderly man who turned toward the sound of my voice with eyes that couldn’t quite see me. And when he spoke, my knees nearly gave out, because I recognized the name Gerald had never once said to me in forty years of marriage.
