The ballroom seemed to hold its breath. On Serena’s screen was the new Forbes cover, and on that cover was my face, above a headline naming me one of the year’s most influential founders in enterprise technology. I did not reach for the phone. I simply looked at my brother, whose smile had frozen into something brittle and confused. “Yes,” I said quietly. “That’s me.”

Reginald Prescott III, who moments earlier had dropped my hand as if it were beneath him, leaned toward the screen, his four generations of shipping-family certainty suddenly wavering. Genevieve’s bracelet clasp lay forgotten. And my parents, who had spent the entire evening nodding along while their son called me a failure, went utterly silent. Julian gave a short, nervous laugh. “That’s, that’s obviously a mistake, a look-alike, some coincidence—” But Serena was already reading aloud from the article, and the company named in the very first line was one every person in that room recognized. It was headquartered, the piece noted, only a few blocks from the ballroom we were standing in. That was the moment my brother understood that the sister he’d handed a serving tray to owned one of the most valuable private companies in the country.
