The Woman Who Kept My Mother’s Promise for Decades and Finally Told Me the Truth2

Rosalind explained slowly, choosing each word with care. Before my mother met my father, she had a daughter, a baby girl she gave up during the hardest year of her life. She had been young, alone, and terrified, with no money and nowhere to go. Rosalind had been the only person who knew. She had helped carry the secret and had watched from a distance ever since.

“That daughter,” Rosalind said, meeting my eyes, “was not you.” She let the sentence settle. “You have a sister. An older sister your mother never got to tell you about. Her name is Cora, and she has spent her whole life not knowing why she was given away or who her real family was.”

I could barely breathe. My mother had carried this alone for decades, hidden it through every birthday and every quiet dinner, and taken it with her when she died. “Why the flowers?” I finally asked. “Why not just find me and tell me?” Rosalind smiled sadly. “Because I promised your mother I would never force the truth on you. I would only reveal it if you cared enough to keep coming, to keep noticing, to keep showing up early enough to find me. She wanted proof that you had the heart to accept a sister rather than resent one.”

She reached into her coat again and handed me a folded slip of paper with an address written on it. “Cora is real, and she is alive, and she has been looking for her family her entire life. Your mother’s last wish was that the two of you would find each other.” I looked down at the grave, at the empty vase where my flowers should have been, and understood at last that every disappearing bouquet had been a message from my mother, guiding me toward a truth she never had the courage to speak. I closed my hand around the address. For the first time in four years, I felt my mother truly beside me.
