The Groom Who Called for a Refund Before the Bride Ever Uninvited Me From the Wedding

Sandra worked quickly, the way good engineers and good attorneys both do. Within days, my guarantee on Trevor’s business loan was formally withdrawn, the venue deposit was canceled and refunded to me, not him, and the family trust was redirected. She called me on a Thursday evening, her voice unusually tight. “Frances,” she said, “you need to see the reference letter he submitted. It isn’t just your name. It’s your signature.”

I drove to her office the next morning. She laid the document on the table between us, and there it was: my name, my title, my company, and a signature at the bottom that I had never written. Trevor had forged it to secure a loan he could not otherwise qualify for, leveraging the reputation I had spent thirty-one years building. Sandra folded her hands. “This is no longer just a family disagreement,” she said quietly. “This is fraud. And if you want to pursue it, the evidence is already in your hands.”
