The Wife Called A Beggar In Court Who Emptied A Library Tote Bag Of Twenty Years Of Receipts

The judge read the notebook page twice. Then she looked up, not at me, but at Grant. “Mr. Harlow,” she said slowly, “is this your handwriting?” The courtroom was so quiet I could hear the clock. Grant’s lawyer leaned toward him, whispering fast, but there was nothing to whisper. Then she turned to the judge and said the sentence that ended it. “Your Honor, my client is not asking for charity. She is asking for the return of a business she funded, leased, and staffed with unpaid labor for twenty-four years, while the plaintiff lied under oath about it eleven minutes ago.” Grant stopped breathing through his nose again. I had watched him do it once already that morning. This time, he did not recover.
