The Secret Vacation Photo That Finally Made Me Stop Paying For My Family’s Chaos

The shift came on a Tuesday, three days before another rent transfer was due. My mom had already sent me the number, that casual online-order text, and I was about to send it when Paige, my appearance-obsessed sister, posted a photo I was clearly never meant to connect to my parents. It was a beach. Turquoise water, a resort infinity pool, a row of cocktails on a table. And in the background, slightly out of focus but unmistakable, were my mother and father, tanned and laughing, my dad in a shirt I had never seen and my mom holding a drink with a little umbrella in it. I did not send the rent that month. Instead, I texted my mom one line. “I saw the beach photos.” Twenty minutes later my phone rang, and it was my father, and the first words out of his mouth, before hello, before any explanation, were shouted loud enough to distort the speaker. “You ungrateful son!”
