The Folder I Slid Across the Dinner Table Held My Sister’s Signature Forged as Mine

“That,” I said quietly, “is a police report. And your name is inside it, right next to a forged mortgage in my name.” The table did not breathe. Bianca’s polished composure, the one she wore like the cream blouse she had arrived in, cracked down the middle. Trevor turned to her slowly, his wineglass forgotten, and asked the question I had been waiting for someone else to ask. “What is she talking about, Bianca?”

Bianca opened her mouth to do what she always did, to explain gently, to make me feel foolish for questioning her. But this time I had the handwriting expert’s findings, the credit report, and the bank’s file. So before she could rewrite the story, I laid one more page on the table, and it was the page that made even my mother gasp.
