They Sued Me Claiming Grandpa Was Unfit, Then The Judge Recognized My Real Name

The courtroom held its breath. I stood slowly. “Yes, Your Honor,” I said. “Dorian Hale was the name I used for eleven years. Before my grandfather brought me back.” Judge Delacroix set down his pen and looked at me with an expression that had nothing judicial in it anymore. It was memory. “You were the boy from the Hale case,” he said quietly. “Fourteen years ago. The abandonment hearing.” My parents’ attorney rose, confused. “Your Honor, we object to whatever this is.” The judge did not even glance at him. “Overruled. Sit down.” He turned back to me, and the whole room felt the ground shift. “I presided over the custody petition when a boy of nine was found living alone in a stripped apartment, after his parents left the state and left him behind. The parents’ names in that file,” he said slowly, opening his memory like a drawer, “were Vivienne and Grant Ashford.”

Vivienne’s tissue slipped from her hand. Grant’s certainty drained from his face like color from a wall. “That’s not, that was a different matter,” Grant started. “It was your matter,” Judge Delacroix said. “I remember it because I’ve presided over thousands of cases and forgotten most of them, but I never forgot the nine-year-old who told me he wasn’t angry at his parents, only worried they’d get in trouble. His grandfather petitioned for custody that year. Winston Ashford. The same man you now stand in my courtroom calling mentally unfit.” The judge’s voice had gone very cold. “The man who took in the child you abandoned is the man whose sanity you’re attacking, to take the money he left that child instead of you.”
