Adrian broke the seal slowly, the way a man opens something he already knows will end a life someone else built on lies. “There are two findings,” he said. “The first is medical. Rosalind’s fertility results from three years ago were altered before they entered the divorce file. Someone removed the pages showing that the failed procedures were caused by a treatable condition, and replaced them with a diagnosis of permanent infertility.” He looked at Damien. “The clinic keeps originals. I pulled them.”
Damien’s smirk was gone. “That proves nothing about who touched them.” “No,” Adrian agreed. “But the second finding does.” He turned the envelope toward Camille. “The paternity panel you requested last spring, under a false name, is in our system too. You never came back for the result. So I brought it here.” Camille’s knees seemed to buckle. She pressed the little boy against her chest as though shielding him from a word not yet spoken. “Don’t,” she whispered. Adrian slid the page free anyway.
