I Unplugged My Microwave Daily Until One Simple Discovery Changed Everything2

At an electricity rate of about 12 cents per kilowatt-hour, the two-week savings amounted to only a few cents.

Even over a full year, the total savings would be just over three dollars.

Meanwhile, unplugging the microwave created new frustrations every single day.

The clock had to be reset after each use, and reaching the outlet became an annoying routine.

The experiment also raised concerns about repeated plugging and unplugging, even though most modern appliances are designed to handle normal use.

In the end, the small reduction in energy use simply did not outweigh the inconvenience.

The experience showed that bigger savings come from improving heating and cooling efficiency, switching to LED lighting, using smart power strips, and upgrading older appliances.

The microwave experiment proved that while standby power is real, focusing on larger household energy users is a much more effective way to lower your electric bill.
