The Night Nurse Sat Beside A Patient Nobody Visited And Learned Who He Truly Was2

The first woman was Dr. Priya Raman, a heart surgeon. Forty years earlier she had been a frightened sixth grader failing math in Mr. Warren’s class. He had stayed after school for a year to tutor her for free. He had never told anyone, and for decades he had done the same for hundreds of children. Every year he quietly sent a handwritten letter to each of them, to remind them they were not alone. They had written back every time.

He had stopped visiting because he did not want to be a burden. His wife died long ago and they had no children. When his health began to fail, he had asked his former students not to come, because he wanted them to remember him strong. But on his notebook was a list of one hundred and nineteen phone numbers, and a note that said, “Call only if the end is near. Tell them the door is open.” He had trusted me with it.

They went in one at a time. Dr. Raman held his hand. The firefighter, a former troublemaker named Terrence, told him he had never forgotten the day Mr. Warren said he was smarter than his grades. By noon the hallway was full of people sharing the same story in different voices. The nurses on the day shift brought extra chairs. I stood against the wall with tears running down my face, finally understanding what he had been waiting for.

Mr. Warren did not die that week. The doctors said it was a miracle, but I think he simply had too many reasons to stay. He recovered enough to move into a small apartment, and his former students take turns visiting him every day. I sit with him on my days off. He still does the crossword in pen, and he still asks about my son. Last month my boy started sixth grade, and the first person he told was Mr. Warren.
