My Whole Family Told Me Not To Come To Christmas Unless I Worked For Free2

I told her to start the car and drive to the fire station two streets over, and I stayed on the line while I called the local police from my own phone. Kyle slammed the folder against her window as she pulled away, then threw it across the driveway. By the time officers retrieved it, Delphine was safe under the station lights with all five children. Inside were papers drafted by a lawyer Kyle had hired in secret, asking Delphine to sign over the house and primary custody.

Over the next hour, the truth came out in pieces. For a year, Kyle had been gambling, and he had lost $64,000 of their savings while hiding every statement. The Santa Barbara getaway I had seen online was paid for with that money. Delphine found out in August and was too ashamed to tell anyone. The ski trip was her way of giving the kids one normal Christmas, and Christmas Eve was her only open lawyer appointment. Mom and Dad had known since September and begged her to stay quiet, afraid of a scandal.

I booked a flight that night and landed the next morning. I paid for two weeks at a family hotel and a $4,500 retainer for a family lawyer, sending the money straight to the firm so it stayed protected. Then I sat Mom and Dad down. Dad admitted he had feared upsetting Kyle, who held a loan against his struggling company. Mom cried and apologized, and they agreed to repay every dollar I had lent them over the years.

A judge froze Kyle’s accounts, ordered him to repay the savings, and awarded Delphine the house and custody. On Christmas Eve, all of us gathered in a small cabin I booked myself, with no skis and no fancy resort. Delphine asked me, quietly and kindly, whether I could watch the kids for one afternoon so she could sleep. I said yes, gladly. For the first time, it was a request and not a demand, and the five loudest children in the world felt like a gift.
