The Second Page Of That Document Changed Everything My Husband Believed About Our Marriage Forever2

My husband sat on the tailgate and admitted it. For fourteen months he had been gambling online, first small bets, then desperate ones, and the cards and the loan had covered his losses. The vacation was meant to look normal while he waited for a payout that never came. Dad explained that a bank officer, an old friend of his, had called the week before after noticing the forged signature on the house loan.

I had never seen the loan, but Dad had quietly arranged for the bank to flag it. A deputy, parked at the end of the lane, walked up with a folder. He explained that forgery and unauthorized account use were crimes, and my husband would have to answer for them. His mother wept and apologized to me, promising to repay every dollar she had spent. His sister handed over her card without a word.

I did not scream. I told my husband I would not press charges if he signed a full confession, entered a gambling treatment program, and agreed to a legal separation. The bank canceled the house loan as fraud, and the card company removed every charge except the ones his mother and sister agreed to repay. He nodded through tears and signed on the hood of his car.

He moved in with his mother and attended treatment every morning. Our son got new sneakers that weekend, and the washing machine was fixed within the week. Months later, the divorce was finalized, and I stayed on my parents’ farm with the children. Every autumn we harvest sweet corn together, and nobody ever tells me again what it takes to earn money.
