My Husband Is Pushing Me to Adopt His Deceased Ex-Wife’s Child — But He Is Not the Father and I Never Agreed to Raise Her

My husband and I have been married for six years. Before we met, he spent seven years with his former partner, Jess. Near the end of that relationship she became pregnant by another man, someone who vanished the moment he learned the truth. Soon after, she was diagnosed with cancer. My husband stayed beside her through her illness. She died shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Kate, who is now six. After Jess died, Kate went to live with her maternal grandmother. My husband remained somewhat involved—birthdays, occasional visits, financial help—but he was never her legal or primary parent. When we married, that fact was clearly explained. Kate was not our responsibility. That understanding was part of the foundation of our life together.

Now everything has changed. Kate’s grandmother is seriously ill and can no longer care for her. Social services have stepped in, and my husband wants us to adopt Kate permanently. We have struggled with infertility for years. After multiple treatments and one heartbreak after another, we were only beginning to consider living child-free or adopting a child we both chose together. Instead I feel cornered into parenting a child deeply tied to his past, a child I barely know. He keeps calling this “our chance” to finally have a child. I cannot shake the feeling that he is trying to finish an unfinished story with Jess. His motivations feel rooted in grief and guilt, not in a shared, intentional desire to raise this particular little girl. I told him that if he is ready for adoption we can consider a child from an orphanage—but not Kate.

That is when my mother-in-law inserted herself. During a recent visit she brought photographs of Kate looking sad and vulnerable. Since then the calls and texts have not stopped. She repeats that this child is part of their family now, that I would be heartless to let her end up in foster care, that I am failing as a wife and future mother, and that I will regret refusing for the rest of my life. My husband never stops her. If anything, I believe he agrees. I feel like I am drowning. If I say yes, I take on full-time motherhood under circumstances I never wanted, with enormous emotional baggage attached. If I say no, I risk the marriage collapsing and being labeled the cold-hearted one by his entire family.

Kate is an innocent child who has lost nearly everyone. That truth sits heavily beside another truth: I never agreed to raise his ex’s daughter, and I will not pretend love can be forced into existence by guilt. His family is using her vulnerability as leverage against my future. Protecting my mental health and the marriage we actually built is not cruelty. Asking me to become a mother overnight to a child I did not choose, for reasons that belong to a grief I did not cause, is the line they crossed. I will not rewrite my life to soothe a story that was never mine to finish.
