After Losing My Husband I Found Love Again But Nobody In My Family Trusted Him2

Harlan explained calmly while my children stood on the gravel, silent. After Raymond’s funeral, he had overheard me in group joke that I would need a wheelchair someday. He had lost his own wife to a stroke that left her unable to climb the stairs of their old house, and he never forgave himself for not building a ramp in time. When he met me, he decided to make his new home safe for any future of mine, whatever it held. The yellow kitchen, the wide doorways and the ramp were all for me. Every night after work, he had labored until midnight to finish before Christmas.

He had never invited me earlier because he wanted the surprise, and because he feared I would think he was presuming too much. Derek’s face crumpled. He admitted he had signed into my bank account three times that month to check for withdrawals, and he found nothing. Harlan had not so much as borrowed a dime. In fact, Harlan quietly slid a folded paper into my hand. It was a deed to the house, with my name added beside his, and he said he only wanted me to feel it was mine too.

I told Harlan I could not accept that yet. I was not ready, and I would not be pushed into anything, even by kindness. He nodded, folded the paper and said he would hold it until I was. Then I turned to my children and told them, gently and firmly, that I loved them, but I was a grown woman and a nurse, and I would decide whom to trust. Derek apologized, tears in his eyes, and promised to log out of my accounts for good.

That Christmas, my whole family ate dinner in the yellow kitchen, Derek carved the turkey, and Harlan’s ramp stood freshly painted outside. In the spring, I did not need the wheelchair, though my knees still ache, and I moved my things in slowly. The old brown recliner now sits beside Harlan’s window, and he naps in it every Sunday.
