My Mother-in-Law Lived Rent-Free in My Home—Then Charged Me $300 to Watch My Son

For three years, my mother-in-law lived in my apartment without paying a single bill, and I never complained because I believed family helped family.

The apartment had been mine long before I met my husband, and every mortgage payment, utility bill, grocery order, and repair came from my paycheck while his mother and sister slowly turned my home into theirs.

At first, they promised it would only be temporary, but temporary quietly became permanent, and eventually no one even remembered there had ever been an end date.

I kept convincing myself that generosity mattered more than keeping score, even as my grocery bills doubled, every closet filled with their belongings, and every room stopped feeling like my own.

The breaking point came on an ordinary Tuesday when my babysitter canceled thirty minutes before an important work meeting.

Knowing my mother-in-law was relaxing in the living room, I politely asked if she could watch my little boy for just thirty minutes until I returned.

She looked up from her phone, smiled faintly, and calmly replied, “Three hundred dollars.”

For a moment I honestly thought she was joking, but her face never changed.

“My time isn’t free,” she said, as if I hadn’t been financing her entire life for years.

Too shocked to argue, I found a neighbor willing to help and rushed to my meeting, but the words stayed in my head all afternoon.

That evening I told my husband what had happened, expecting him to be just as stunned.

Instead, he frowned at me and said, “You thought my mom was free childcare.”

In that instant, I realized the biggest problem wasn’t the outrageous price she demanded.

It was that my own husband believed I was the unreasonable one.

That night I stopped asking myself how to keep everyone comfortable.

The next morning, I quietly walked into the building manager’s office—and asked one simple question that would change everything.
