My Daughter Quietly Accepted That Her Father Could Not Afford A Prom Dress For Her2

Curtis did not hang up. He told Brenda he was going to say it all, and then he said it to us. Two months earlier, Brenda had quietly cleared his checking account to pay for Kayla’s gown, her salon appointments, and a weekend trip. When Willa’s request came, there was nothing left, so Brenda told him to claim work was slow, and he went along, ashamed. His welding hours had never dropped. He had simply handed over his paychecks without checking, because he did not want an argument at home.

Then Marjorie’s phone rang in her purse, and she put her son on speaker from the car. She told him, gently, that she had not posted to shame anyone. She wanted Willa to know her grandmother loved her, and that a man who hides from his own daughter’s sadness is not the man Marjorie raised. Curtis was silent a long time. Then he said he had already opened a new account in his name only, and he would send Marjorie every dollar she had spent by Friday.

Willa listened with her arms wrapped around herself. At last she said, quietly, that she did not need the money back. She needed her dad to come to prom pictures. Curtis said yes through tears, and the next Saturday, he knocked on our door with a corsage in a plastic box and his hands shaking. He took photographs on the porch beside Marjorie, and Willa smiled in the emerald dress. Brenda stayed away.

Over the next months, Curtis kept his promises. He met with a counselor, kept the new account and paid Willa’s graduation fees without being asked. Marjorie refused his repayment, so Curtis opened a small savings account for Willa instead. At graduation, he sat in the front row beside his mother. Willa hung the emerald dress in her closet, and every time she walks past it, she remembers who showed up.
