My Father Sold His Old Garage And Bought A Dream Motorcycle And I Was Furious2

Dad led me to the table, where the woman introduced herself as Ms. Kessler, his lawyer. He slid an envelope toward me with my name on it, and I opened it with shaking hands. It was a loan servicer’s statement dated three weeks earlier, showing a balance of zero. Every cent of my $58,000 in student loans had been paid in full, and I had not opened a single letter from the servicer since our argument.

Dad rubbed his oil-stained thumb across the wood and explained. The garage had sold for $410,000, and he had spent it in order. My loans came first, then $85,000 went into a trust for a condo down payment, which Ms. Kessler would release the day I picked a place. The Harley, he said, came from his own retirement savings, the one part he never planned to leave to anyone. He had meant to tell me at Thanksgiving, but I had stopped answering his calls.

Then I told him everything, because lying to that tired face was impossible. I confessed the forms in my bag, the signature I planned to copy, and the accounts I knew how to move. Ms. Kessler said quietly that it would have been forgery and financial exploitation of an elder, with prison time attached. Dad did not shout. He reached into his vest, set a small wooden box on the table, and told me the ride was never for adventure. It would carry Mom’s ashes to the twelve places she had circled on a map in 1989, places he never took her because he worked every Sunday to raise me. The skulls on his arms, he said, hid her initials.

I tore the forms in half and cried until his shirt was wet. He called it the best thing I had ever shown him. Two weeks later, I took unpaid leave, bought a used helmet, and rode behind him for the first thousand miles. At the Grand Canyon, we scattered the first handful together. That fall, I signed a lease on my first condo, and the housewarming card on the counter was signed Dad, with a tiny skull in the corner.
