My Husband Smiled While Drinking His Coffee Before Heading Out To Meet Her That Morning2

Kyle stumbled out of the bathroom, gray and shaky, and froze when he saw everyone on our porch. Then it all came out. Twenty-five years earlier, before he met me, he had a short relationship with Diane, who moved away without telling him she was pregnant. Vanessa found him through a DNA registry, took a job as his secretary to get to know him first, and told him the truth two weeks ago. He had kept it from me out of pure fear that I would never trust him again.

The meeting that morning was their first with Diane in twenty-five years, set at the hotel where she was staying. The blue shirt was the one Diane remembered him wearing when they met, and the cologne was Diane’s request, because it reminded her of that summer. I had read every message with the worst possible meaning. Vanessa had pleaded with him for days to tell me, and her last text, the one on the phone, was her final ultimatum before she came here herself.

My throat tightened, because I owed them the truth too. Standing in my own hallway, I admitted that I had put laxatives in his coffee, certain he was walking toward another woman. Nobody spoke. Kyle stared at me, pale and exhausted. Then Diane gave a weak, astonished laugh and said she had waited twenty-five years, and she could wait one more afternoon. Vanessa pressed her lips together and said quietly that she understood how all of it must have looked.

I did not make excuses. I told Kyle I was sorry, that what I did was wrong, and that I should have confronted him instead of poisoning his trust. He admitted he had made his own mistake by hiding the truth, and we agreed to see a counselor together. That afternoon, after he rested, we all drove to the hotel and finally sat down as a family. The black mug that says Best Husband sits in our cupboard, and he now makes his own coffee.
