My Doctor Gave Me Terrible News Before I Finally Boarded The Plane To See Europe2

It was my children, Nora and Ethan, both grown now, with red eyes and tight smiles. Daniel had found them through the school alumni network after learning of my diagnosis from our old principal, Ms. Okafor, who had seen me crying in a hospital waiting room two weeks earlier. I had kept my illness secret, because I could not bear to watch them suffer. Nora said she wished I had trusted them, and then she hugged me so hard my suitcase tipped over.

Then I finished Daniel’s letter. When he was nine, I had quietly paid his lunch fees from my own pocket and bought him a winter coat, and he had never forgotten it. Now, as the airline’s director of operations, he had arranged everything: first class seats to Rome, a hotel near the Colosseum, and a private nurse named Lena who would travel with us. He wrote that my doctor had cleared the trip in writing, because he had called her himself, with my children’s permission. He had also asked the gate staff to hold the envelope until I arrived.

The trip was gentle and unhurried. For eleven days, we walked through Rome slowly, with Lena checking on me each morning. I tasted real gelato in a sunlit square, tossed a coin into the Trevi Fountain, and stood in the Vatican with my children on either side of me. Daniel met us on the fourth evening, now a tall man in a gray suit, and he cried when I called him by his old nickname, Danny.

I came home with a full camera and a lighter heart. My children moved in with me for the months ahead, and we spent them talking, laughing, and finally telling each other everything. Next spring, Daniel has promised us tickets to Lisbon, if my doctor agrees, and I plan to say yes. I wrote him a reply thanking him for letting me see the world, and I told him the smallest kindness never disappears, it simply waits for the right day to come back.
