My Father Paid My Son Less Than His Cousins And I Quietly Covered The Difference2

Dad sat back down and explained it slowly. Eleven years ago, when each of his grandsons was born, he had started a savings envelope for college, a hundred dollars a month apiece. Three years ago, when Meredith’s husband walked out, her house payments fell behind, and Dad quietly took $9,000 from Miles’s envelope to save her home. He had planned to replace it before anyone noticed, but he never managed to. The thirty dollar difference on the lawn was his shame wearing a clumsy disguise, because he could not look the boy he had shorted in the eye.

Landon cleared his throat from the doorway, his face pale. He said he had found the bank slip last month while helping Grandpa with the mail, and he had kept quiet, ashamed. Ever since, he and Weston had been quietly sharing part of their pay with Miles, which was why they had pushed their ten dollar bills across the table that Saturday. Weston added that their mother had no idea, because Dad had told her the money came from old savings bonds.

I felt my throat close. Dad said he would sell the north pasture to repay every dollar, and he would not hear any argument. Then Miles stood, wiped his hands on his grass-stained shirt, and said he did not want the money. He wanted to be paid the same as everyone else, and he wanted Grandpa to stop turning away. Dad covered his face and wept, and I realized I had never once seen him cry. Just then, a car door slammed outside, because Weston had texted their mother, and Meredith ran in, breathless, and heard everything.

She sobbed and offered to repay the loan from her paychecks, but Dad refused and sold the pasture that autumn anyway. Every dollar went back into Miles’s envelope, along with interest. From the next Saturday on, he paid all three boys fifty dollars, and I never opened my wallet at that table again. Dad wore the straw hat to every mowing, and he started handing Miles his envelope first.
