My Mother In Law Joked About My Little Boy’s Belly At Her Birthday Dinner Party2

Margaret explained through tears as she drove. She had worked thirty years as an emergency room nurse before retiring, and the moment Henry flinched at her teasing, she felt how rigid his belly was. His right side was swollen and tender, and he had been sitting stiffly all evening. She had been terrified and had covered it with bad jokes, the way she always did when she was afraid. Mark said nothing, but he squeezed her shoulder once, and she drove faster.

At the hospital, Dr. Alvarez’s team met us at the doors. The test results had come back that afternoon, and the scan showed a badly infected appendix, close to bursting. Henry’s stomachaches over the past weeks had been warning signs, but his round belly had hidden the swelling from everyone, including us. Surgeons took him straight to the operating room at 9:40 that night. I held his hand until the doors closed, and he whispered, “Mommy, tell Grandma I’m not mad.”

The wait lasted two hours. Margaret sat in a plastic chair with her purse in her lap, shaking, and finally she apologized to me. She said she would never forget the way Henry pulled his shirt down. Mark sat beside her and took her hand, and for the first time in weeks, I did too. Just before midnight, the surgeon walked out smiling. The appendix had been removed one hour before it would have burst, and Henry would make a full recovery.

Henry came home four days later, tired but laughing. Margaret arrived with a stack of dinosaur books and a chocolate cake, and she knelt beside his bed and told him his body was exactly right and every joke she had made was wrong. Henry hugged her and asked for the biggest slice. She never made another comment about anyone’s body, and at her next dinner, nobody laughed unless Henry laughed too.
