What That Stranger Told Me In His Driveway Changed Everything I Believed About My Marriage2

The anger drained out of me so fast that my knees almost gave way. Daniel explained that their mother had given him up at nineteen, long before she married Elena’s father, and had carried the secret her whole life. When she died last spring, Elena found a letter in her jewelry box and took a DNA test with shaking hands. Within a week, she had a match, a name, and a brother twelve years older who had been searching for her too.

The pillow was a gift from his daughters, Lily and Rose, who had printed it from a photo taken at the riverside park on the day Elena and Daniel first met. The kiss on her head was a brother’s kiss, the kind he had never been allowed to give her. I told him about the necklace, the mole, and the jacket, and he laughed until he cried. Then he admitted he had been terrified she would regret telling anyone before she was ready.

I called Elena from his driveway. She answered on the first ring, and her voice broke when I said, “I met your brother.” She said she had planned to tell me over dinner on Saturday, with candles and a cake, and she was crying so hard that I could not tell whether she was happy or ashamed. I told her I had followed his car like an idiot, and she laughed, and then I laughed, and for a minute neither of us could speak.

That Sunday, the four of us ate dinner at our house, Daniel and his daughters filling every chair, Elena holding the pillow in her lap. She toasted her mother’s secret and said it had finally brought her a family. Now every Wednesday, the girls ride their bikes to our porch, and I keep that pillow on the couch. I never did tell Elena how close I came to calling a lawyer, but she knows.
