She Gave Away My Late Husband’s Precious Keepsake And Then Someone Knocked On My Door2

Colleen’s face drained of color. “I did not know what it was,” she whispered. Colonel Reeves did not raise his voice. He explained that the donation slip taped to the box carried our address, which was how Marcus had traced it. Then he told me what Raymond never did. In 1969, an ambush killed most of their squad. Raymond, shot through the shoulder and leg, carried the wounded lieutenant nearly a mile to safety. He was recommended for a higher honor and refused it, saying the men who died deserved it more.

I opened the envelope with shaking fingers. Henry had written to Raymond, not knowing he was gone. For decades, he searched for the sergeant who saved him, but a clerical error listed Raymond as killed that day. Henry learned the truth only last year, in old records. “Thank you for my whole life,” the letter ended. “Every grandchild I held was yours too.” The colonel set down a second page. Henry had left a small fund of forty thousand dollars for Raymond’s family.

Then Scott walked in from work and stopped in the doorway. He saw the photograph, the medal, and his wife’s pale face. Colleen began to cry and said she had only wanted to help. I told her a person’s life is not clutter. “Raymond kept that medal for fifty-three years, and you gave it away in one afternoon,” I said calmly. Scott lowered his head and admitted he had never opened the drawer. I gave them thirty days to find a home of their own.

Marcus returned the next week in his thrift store polo, and the colonel shook his hand. A veterans group offered him a scholarship he had never expected. In June, the state held a ceremony, and I stood beside Henry’s daughter while she held my hand. That evening, I placed the medal back in its velvet case and returned it to the top drawer. On the anniversary, I took it out, held it for one minute, and put it back.
