My Son Moved Out For Three Days And Came Home Holding One Small Folded Page2

I opened the door and let them in. Claire spoke first, her voice cracking. “Please, let me explain before anyone says something they cannot take back.” I looked at my son, then at the boy who looked so much like him, and finally understood why strangers had always called them brothers. “Everything on that page is true,” I said. “And everything I told you about your father was only half of him.”

Eleven years ago, a week after Richard’s funeral, Claire came to my kitchen and told me Nathan was his son. Richard had been with her before either boy was born, and he never told either of us. I demanded proof, so we signed for a private test, and the result came back exactly as you see it. I wanted to scream at her and take Jacob far away. But the boys were eight, they had just lost the only father one of them ever knew, and I could not bear to take his best friend away too.

So Claire and I made a terrible promise. We would keep the secret until the boys were grown, and raise them side by side so they would never feel like strangers. I told myself it was love, but it was fear, and I lied to Jacob for eleven years because I never found the words. Nathan found the report in his mother’s desk last week and showed it to Jacob. Neither believed it, so Jacob moved in to look for proof, and he took the page from Claire’s house.

Jacob wept, then turned to Nathan, who stood trembling in the doorway. “You are my brother,” Jacob said, as if testing the word. Nathan nodded and said they had always been brothers anyway. Claire and I apologized together and promised no more secrets. That night, the four of us ate dinner at my table, and the boys kept their apartment. Months later, they stood side by side at Richard’s grave, finally sharing the truth.
