My Son Started School And On Day Five The Principal Called About Two Police Officers2

The officer explained that Mason’s mother had been hospitalized three days earlier, and his stepfather had left him alone in the house with almost no food. Mason had been afraid to tell any adult. Caleb, who noticed everything, saw him hiding his lunch to save it and sneaking crackers from the cafeteria. He asked Mason what was wrong, and Mason whispered the truth. Caleb walked straight to the office, holding Mason’s drawing, and refused to leave until someone listened.

The officers had gone to the address immediately. They found the house cold and nearly empty, and contacted child services. Mason was placed with a kind foster family, and his mother, recovering, was told her son was safe. Principal Walsh said that in twenty-six years, he had never seen a child so determined to protect a friend.

I knelt in front of Caleb and asked why he hadn’t told us. He said Mason made him promise, but he knew some promises needed grown-ups. My husband cried openly. The officers shook Caleb’s hand and gave him a sticker badge reading “Junior Helper.” He wore it all weekend.

Mason’s mother recovered, and the stepfather faced charges. Mason now visits every Saturday, and the boys build towers out of blocks and argue about snacks. The school held an assembly to honor Caleb, and the whole gym cheered. He grinned, then asked whether there would be cake, because friends deserve cake.
