The Attorney On The Porch Opened A Folder And Everyone Inside The House Went Silent2

Harold explained that eight years earlier, after the bank seized the house, I had quietly bought it through a company so my parents would not lose their home. I kept the rent low enough that they could still afford their country club dues, and I told no one. Franklin sputtered that it was impossible, that I had never had that kind of money. Harold replied that my consulting firm had grown into something far larger than they had ever bothered to ask about.

The deputies stood quietly by the door while Harold read clause nine aloud. Because Franklin had ordered the owner’s family out of the house, the lease was void, and the household had thirty days to vacate. Delphine began to cry and said they had not meant it. Tabitha insisted it was only a misunderstanding about juice. Grayson said nothing, picked up his coat, and walked out to his car.

I watched all of it from the hotel with Oliver asleep beside me, and I asked Harold to put me on speaker. I told my parents I had never wanted the house, only a table where my son was welcome. My father’s voice was small when he asked whether I would really put them out in the snow. I answered that they had just shown me exactly how that felt, and that I had no intention of doing the same to them.

I gave them the thirty days, with one condition: a written apology to Oliver. It arrived a week later, in my father’s shaky handwriting, and Oliver kept it on the refrigerator. By spring they had moved into a small apartment, and I rented the house to a young family. Delphine now calls every Sunday and asks about her grandson first. On Thanksgiving, we set a place for them at our own table.
