Nine Neighbors Arrived At Sunrise While Our Former Manager Watched Silently From The Road2

Wade climbed out and stood by the gate with his hat in his hands. Nobody spoke. Eleven men and my family kept working, but every ear was turned. He asked, in a rough voice, if he could say one thing. Russell nodded from the tailgate. Wade said he had taken the money to cover gambling debts, and that every day for three years he had planned to confess and every day lost his nerve.

I told him the charges would stand, and he nodded as if he had expected it. Then he said he had spoken to the county attorney that morning and agreed to repay every dollar, and he had brought a signed statement and the deed to his own small acreage as security. Walter read it, folded it, and handed it to me without a word. It was not forgiveness, but it was a start.

Wade left quietly. We finished all two hundred and eighty calves by two in the afternoon, and Lorna’s potato salad appeared on the tailgate an hour later, delivered by a neighbor, with a note that said only, “I am so sorry.” I ate a plate of it, because Russell asked me to. The county attorney later confirmed the repayment plan, and the court approved it.

Russell’s treatment worked, and by the next spring he was riding again. Hannah runs the brandings now, with Ruby keeping the tally book. The old book with Wade’s handwriting sits in a drawer. The new one begins with our daughter’s name, and every year the neighbors come at sunrise.
