My Son Married Without Me And Then Everyone Gathered To Watch Me Hand Over Keys2

The letter was short. Howard wrote that the beach house should pass to our son only if he treated his mother with kindness, and that if he did not, the house should go to a trust for hurricane survivors. He had asked me to keep it sealed until the day I chose to give it to our child. Dylan read it over my shoulder, and his face lost all its color.

The woman in the navy suit was my attorney, Ms. Pruitt. She explained that the deed had never been changed, and that the document Dylan saw in my hallway was only a draft, unsigned, which he had photographed and shown to everyone as proof. She also held the original copy of the letter at her office, so opening mine had proved nothing but intent. Vernon asked his daughter quietly whether she had known, and Tessa began to cry.

Dylan tried to shout that I had humiliated him, but twenty-nine guests were already collecting their coats. Rosalind demanded that I apologize. I told her calmly that I had been left off a guest list, described as “feeling better,” and fed to a wedding cake, and that an apology was owed in the other direction. Tessa stepped forward and said it first, without excuses. Dylan stood silent a long time, then said he was sorry too, and for once I could hear that he meant it.

I did not give him the house. I gave him a year. If he treated me and Tessa’s family honestly, and showed up at my table every Sunday, we would revisit Howard’s letter together. He agreed. He carried his suitcases to the car himself, and I put the photograph of Howard back on the mantel, where it belonged. Now two cars pull into my driveway every Sunday. Tessa brings pie, and Dylan fixes the porch steps without being asked.
