My Father Walked Into Our Apartment And Froze Before Saying Four Unforgettable Words Aloud2

I explained everything while Dad sat on our sofa holding his granddaughter. When Julian recovered, he insisted I return to school, and he worked two jobs to pay for it. I finished at a different university, took evening classes, and graduated four years later. I became a doctor, working in a clinic that treats patients who cannot afford care, because I had once been the family with no one to lean on.

Dad listened without interrupting, then asked why I never told him. I said I had tried, but every call went unanswered, and I did not want to win him back with a diploma. I wanted him to accept me as I was. His voice broke when he admitted his pride had cost him seven years, and that he had been too ashamed to call first. Julian placed a hand on his shoulder.

The little girl, Sophie, was his granddaughter, born three years earlier. Dad had not known she existed. He held her all evening and fell asleep in our armchair with her tucked against his chest. In the morning, he cooked pancakes badly, and we laughed until our eyes ran. He did not mention taking me home. He asked only whether he could stay for breakfast every Sunday.

Now Dad volunteers at my clinic twice a week, greeting patients at the front desk with a stethoscope draped around his neck, just for show. Julian and I married the following spring, with Dad walking me down the aisle. The diploma still hangs in our living room. Beneath it, Dad framed a small note in his handwriting, which reads: “I was wrong, and I am proud.”
