The Day My Former Mother In Law Left My House A Neighbor Handed Me This2

Inside the last envelope was a legal document and a short letter. Adelaide had quietly changed her will, leaving her small house and savings to me, not to her four children. She wrote that she had asked each of them for help during her injury as a test, and all four had refused. She had hoped one would surprise her. None did. Meanwhile, I had asked for nothing, and I had never once mentioned the money she might leave.

She explained why she had come to stay. She wanted to know, before she was too old to change anything, whether the kindness I showed her years ago was real or only politeness. For six weeks she had watched me cook, clean, and drive her without complaint. The nervous questions about when I would be out were because she had been arranging the lawyer’s visit and the paperwork in secret.

I cried at my kitchen table with the letters spread around me. When I called Adelaide, she answered on the first ring, and I told her I did not want the house, only her. She laughed and cried at once and said she would not be changing her mind, because the people who show up are the family. Her children were furious, but the will was valid.

Adelaide lives in her own home still, healthy and walking with a cane, and I visit every Sunday. Her children have slowly begun to apologize, and I never discuss Colin, as always. I keep the shoebox on my shelf, and when I feel doubt, I read the first letter. She taught me that kindness, offered without any expectation, is the only inheritance worth having.
