My Husband Pulled Me Away From Dinner And Pointed At One Photograph On The Wall2

She sat us down in the living room and spoke slowly. Her name was Eleanor, and forty years ago she had been a widowed seamstress with two sons, no money, and a failing heart that doctors said would not last. She had given her youngest, a baby, to a kind couple through a church adoption, believing she would not live to raise him. She lived, but the records were sealed, and she never found him.

A few years ago, an adoption registry finally matched her to a man named Daniel, now living two states away. She learned his wife’s name and which street they were moving to. She bought nothing and asked for nothing. She simply waited for them to arrive, baked cookies, and prayed he would walk through her door. Seeing the baby blanket on his wrist, the same yellow thread, she said, was the happiest moment of her long life.

Danny sat motionless for a long time, then asked her one question. Why the pink house? She smiled and said it was the color of the dress in the photograph, and she had painted it that way so that, if he ever drove by, something might feel familiar. He laughed and cried at once, and I held both their hands. The older boy in the photograph, his brother Thomas, still lived across the country and had been waiting for the call.

We never ate that dinner, but we ate cold cookies on her sofa until midnight. Thomas flew in the following week, and the three of them stood together in her garden for the first photograph in forty years. I still bring her groceries on Sundays, and Danny mows her lawn. The Pink Lady no longer lives alone, and her walls are finally filling up with pictures.
