My Sister Chose A Realtor Before The Will Reading And Then The Workshop Floor Opened2

The deeds were for the lot beside the condo, three rental cottages, and a small parcel on the lake, all purchased by Dad over twenty-eight years and held in a trust that named me as trustee. Marissa’s face twisted. She said Dad had never mentioned any trust. Walter Hastings, whom I had called from the ladder, arrived within the hour and confirmed it calmly. The condo was only a fraction of what Dad had built, and the trust had its own rules.

The note explained everything. Dad had watched Marissa treat property as something to sell and Trevor as someone who would follow her, so he quietly placed his real savings where only a careful person would find them. He wrote that the hidden room was the one place he trusted to stay unchanged, and that the brass key opened the fourth cabinet, which held letters for each of us. He asked that nothing be sold for one year, and that the three of us read our letters together.

Marissa fought it for a week, then read hers alone at my kitchen table. I never learned exactly what it said, but she cried, and she canceled the Realtor that evening. Trevor’s letter apologized for the years he had stayed quiet, and he finally spoke up, telling his sister that Dad had been right about them both. The county approved the wiring after a small fee, and nothing in that room was ever considered a crime.

We kept the cottages and rented them to families, splitting the income three ways, with a share going to Dad’s literacy foundation. A year later, we sold the condo together, on our own terms. I keep Dad’s carpenter’s level on my desk, and I still check what lies beneath every contract I read. Marissa and I have lunch every Friday, and sometimes she asks me to be practical, and we both laugh.
