I Was Walking Out On My Boyfriend Until I Heard Him Whispering To My Father2

I sat down on the stairs and cried. Jason had spent nearly forty thousand dollars of his savings to save my father’s house, then waited four years rather than let me say yes out of gratitude. Dad kept putting off the confession, afraid I would think less of him. Jason admitted that his own mistake was keeping the secret so long, which had cost me years of doubt and nearly cost us everything.

I was angry for a minute, and then it passed. I told Dad that I had never once been ashamed of him, only worried about the roof, and he sobbed into his hands. I told Jason that he should have trusted me, but that I understood why he did not. He opened the box, and inside sat a simple gold ring, the one he had bought years earlier, polished and waiting.

He did not kneel until I asked him to. I laughed through tears and said yes before he finished the question. Dad stood in the kitchen wiping his eyes and muttering about dust. I carried my suitcase back upstairs and unpacked every sweater, one at a time, while Jason sat on the bed and watched like a man who could finally breathe.

We married the next spring in Dad’s backyard, with the repaired roof in every photograph. Dad gave a short toast, and he told the whole story himself, with Jason’s hand on his shoulder. We paid back what Jason had spent, slowly, though he pretends not to notice. Every Sunday, the three of us watch football, and nobody has a secret left to keep.
